​​Ceredigion Command follows the county boundary of Ceredigion. There are upwards of 130 personnel based at the following stations: Aberystwyth, Aberaeron, Cardigan, New Quay, Lampeter and Tregaron, together with a Volunteer Unit at Borth. Llandysul Fire Station although situated in Carmarthenshire provides a service to the people and communities of Ceredigion.

Within the Command there are six major pumping appliances, two rural response pumps, an aerial ladder appliance, an inflatable boat and Land Rover unit along with a Transit pumping appliance. Command Headquarters is based at Trefechan, Aberystwyth where a Community Risk Reduction Team, a Business Fire Safety Team, an Operational Response Team and a vehicle repair workshop are located. Oncall fire fighting crews operate with the Whole time team at Aberystwyth and also at each of the five Community Fire Stations in the Command.

Ceredigion is a predominantly rural County with a population of approximately 75922, although the total population is swelled in the summer months due to the area being a popular tourist destination. There are 34569 dwellings located within the county’s 179500 hectares (1795 km2) with the majority located along the coastal belt and the 3 main population areas of Aberystwyth , Lampeter and Cardigan , with the County becoming progressively more sparsely populated further east.

The county has many significant buildings and institutions which include the National Library of Wales, Bronglais Hospital, Alexandra Hall, Local Authority and Welsh Government offices, University Buildings in both Aberystwyth and Lampeter, numerous hotels, aged persons homes, small industry and a former military base in Aberporth.

The Community Safety department in Ceredigion acknowledges and understands that the most effective way of protecting the counties citizens, infrastructure and the environment is to prevent emergency incidents occurring in the first place.

We also acknowledge that the issues and challenges facing us are continually changing and therefore our approach to reducing incidents and managing risk needs to be flexible to ensure our interventions remain effective and make a difference to the lives of our citizens. Education and behavioural change is one of the most effective way of raising safety awareness and reducing risk, therefore we focus on providing safety information and delivering educational/ engagement activities to a wide range of people within our community.

To help us achieve this, we work closely with a range of partners such as Dyfed Powys Police, Social Services departments, Local Authority, and a range of third sector organisations, sharing information and resources to ensure we help those most at risk.

Business Fire Safety

Ceredigion command currently has two Fire Safety Managers who undertake inspections in line with current Fire Safety Legislation (The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005) within Ceredigion in all non-domestic premises; .i.e. factories, warehouses, hotels, offices etc.


Inspection, through Fire Safety Legislation, which sets out employers and others responsibilities for providing and maintaining a safe environment in line with current Fire Safety Legislation (The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005).

False Alarm Reduction from Automatic Fire Alarm Systems

Reduce the number of unwanted automatic fire alarm signals by way of proactively working with the ‘responsible person’ for the system.


Liaising with other agencies to provide specialist advice on Building Regulations approval and Licensable activities.


Although our primary aim is to prevent fires and other emergencies from occurring, it is inevitable that emergency situations will develop. We will therefore continue to provide the highest quality of service to our communities by ensuring that our operational personnel receive the very highest quality of training; that they are equipped to deal with all emergency incidents to which they may be called upon to respond to and that they have a thorough knowledge of the risks to which they may be exposed.

In Ceredigion we attend on average 1450 incidents a year including property fires, road traffic collisions, wildfires, floods, animal rescues and other emergencies. To deal with this demand our highly skilled Fire-fighters provide round the clock emergency cover, responding to incidents in one or more of  the six major pumping appliances,  two rural response pumps and  transit pumping appliance  supported by a number of specialist vehicles. We monitor our performance continuously and are committed to improving efficiency and effectiveness wherever we can.

We are constantly improving our operational equipment, resource management and specialist training to ensure our crews have the knowledge and technical skills necessary to manage Special Service calls (e.g. Rescues, Flooding etc)

In Ceredigion we are also working with the local emergency planning department and other key stake holders in sharing of information to ensure that crews have the most up to date and pertinent details on risk sites within the county.
